The parents of O'Grady are Jim O'Grady who is a financial advisor, as well as Jan O'Grady. Her parents raised her at home in Wheaton (Illinois) where she graduated in 1981 from North High School of Wheaton. Her appearances in commercials prior to making the move to Los Angeles in 1986. Her career O'Grady began her career as models for Montgomery Ward, and well making several commercials. She was the star of her debut on the big screen in the romantic comedy of 1988 She's Having a Baby, and she was later cast in the recurring role of ABC drama China Beach opposite Dana Delany. Alongside guest-starring on different shows and appearing in independent films as well as produced for television, she also appeared as an actor in a variety of TV series. Her first major role was that of Donna Abandando on the ABC Police drama NYPD Blue. O'Grady was the large-haired secretariat from 1993 until 1996 was among the Emmy Award nominees each year for Outstanding Drama Series Supporting Actress. The entire cast as well as O'Grady won the Screen Actors Guild Award of Outstanding Performance by an Drama Series Ensemble in 1995.
