Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. After her father had left the family of Ford, they were managed by her mom, grandmother as well as godparents. As a child Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional disorder. Ford began to be interested in acting when she was a teenager and enrolled in the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School. After a couple of weeks, she realized the school was not right for her. Ford decided to apply instead for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and eventually secured an interview on her fourth attempt. Shaun Dingwall - who later played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was among her fellow students. Ford earned her bachelor's degree in 1993. Before that, however, Ford made a television debut on Surgical Spirit in an episode from 1991. Ford took the professional name of Catherine Tate. Tate was a part of such programs on television as The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London Burning. She also worked regularly in theatres, before eventually becoming a member of the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate's stand-up comedy, which she began adding to her show in 1996, soon gained her admiration.
