Catherine Ford was born Bloomsbury in London. Because her father had left the family, it was managed by her grandmother, mom, and godparents. When she was a young girl Ford experienced anxiety related to an obsessional-compulsive condition. Ford was interested in the profession of acting in her teenage years and she became a member of the National Youth Theatre. The school she was accepted to was Sylvia Young Theatre School. However, after a short period of days, she realized that this school wasn't right for her. Ford returned to Central School of Speech and Drama and, on the fourth time she applied, she was finally admitted. Shaun Dingwall would play Pete Tyler who is a character that was recurring in Doctor Who. Ford earned her bachelor's degree in 1993. But, before then, Ford made a television debut as a character in Surgical Spirit in an episode that aired in 1990. Ford took the professional name of Catherine Tate. Through the Nineties, Tate could be seen on television in programmes like The Bill, Men Behaving Badly and London's Burning. Tate would also frequently work in the theatre, and later joined in the Royal Shakespeare Company during its season 2000-2001. But Tate was soon gaining notice for her stand-up comedy, which she added to her show in 1996.
