Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father had abandoned the family, so she was fostered by her mother grandparents and godparents. In her early years, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder, suffering anxiety related to the word association. Ford was intrigued by the field of acting during her teen years, and was a part of the National Youth Theatre. Ford was accepted into the Sylvia Young Theatre School, however, she decided after one week that she wasn't a good choice for this school. Ford made an application to the Central School of Speech and Drama and eventually secured a position on her fourth try. A classmate of hers included Shaun Dingwall, who would later have a recurring role in the role of Pete Tyler in Doctor Who. Ford could graduate in 1993. She made her television debut in the 1992 episode Surgical Spirit. She adopted the name Catherine Tate. Tate first appeared on television in the year 1991, appearing on television shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. as well as London's Burning. Tate also performed regularly in the theatre, eventually becoming a member of in the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate's stand-up humor and humour, which she added to her show in 1996, quickly gained her attention.
